Since there were such good reviews, I was really hoping for more. I simply could not be invested in the story nor characters. There was so much potential for adventure, world building, and character development, but it simply was not there.
Rereading this classic series, and I’m enjoying it more the second time around since I can pick up a lot more clues. This is some of the best world building I’ve ever read, and I love the writing style. Perfect for any fan of fantasy!
The first book was mostly world-building; this second book provided a much-needed change of scenery and character development. I enjoyed watching Han and Raisa grow independently in this book, but I felt their reunion was delayed too long. There is also a lot of foreshadowing that I missed the first time - this truly is a brilliantly plotted series.
I can’t help but think this was written for me. It has everything I love: magic, romance, excellent world-building, and interesting characters. It is perfect for fans of “Throne of Glass” and “Avatar: The Last Airbender”.
Spoiler alert: I knocked off a star because of Sareem’s horrible death. That was just cruel!

An exciting introduction of new characters and change of setting. You can see how Vhalla transitions from being weak and helpless to a strong sorcerer. Seeing Aldrik and Vhalla’s romance develop further is also such a treat. I love this series so much!
I honestly think this series should’ve been a trilogy; the last two books were too slow and political. This conclusion had a very weak plot, but I enjoyed the series overall.
