When a book hits you close to home it's hard to review because it becomes something personal and you can be very generic or you end up oversharing.
I don't want to overshare but this book made me reflect, cry and I was emotionally involved in what I read.
It's not an easy or entertaining read, it's weird at time. It's the story of a coming of age, of grief, and books.
There's magic realism, there're heartbreaking moments but there's also plenty of food for thought.
The author delivers a great story and great characters.

A great start for a new distopian series. A page turner with a great world building, interesting and fleshed out characters, and a compelling plot.
The author is a talented storyteller and i can't wait to read the next book in this series.

I'm a fan of book written by vets and I thoroughly enjoyed this one. It made smile, moved me and I liked the style of writing.
It's a book that can be read one story at a time and the author is a good storyteller.

I'm a bit unobservant and thought this was the third book in another series I read (it also deals with half-Orcs).
That said I loved it from the first pages as the author is a hell of a talented storyteller and I was thoroughly enjoying what I was reading even if I'm sure I missed something.
I loved the characters, the fast paced plot, and the humour.
The world building is fascinating and I will surely appreciated it more once I read the rest of the series.
It surely was serendipity as i discovered a new to me excellent fantasy author.

Some excellent fantasy series make me cry buckets when I have to say my goodbyes, this is one of those cases.
i can write plenty of blah blah but I loved what I read as it's well written, complex, fast paced, and gripping.
R.J. Barker is a talented storyteller and he expands the world building and add layers to his characters.
It's the great end of a great series.

I already read some of the stories featured in this book and knew that M.R. James is a great storyteller of spooky ghost stories.
