I don't know if a collection of short stories is the best way to start reading the work of an author, I know that this one was a good way as there's different tones, topics and I was able to appreciate the style of writing and the excellent character development.
I loved the stories and found them emotionally charged.
Highly recommended.

This was the book that kept me sane while I was having some health issues that sent me to an Emergency Room.
As I had to wait I started reading it was amazing as it helped to keep my mind from the issues and the bleak environment.
It's a riveting and well researched story, the characters are fleshed out and realistic, the historical background vivid.
There's secrets, murders, betrayal: I read it as fast as I could and loved it.
Highly recommended.

Crime fiction is loose definition for something that can be the traditional story or a gritty and gorey novel featuring serial killers.
This is an intersting read but somehow if felt rushed and it seems more oriented to list and discuss thrillers than other type of crime of stories. A cozy or a traditional mystery are crime story. MC Beaton or Louise Penny sell tons of books but they're not in this list.
The theory that women want gore seemed a bit farfetched to me, I like true crime but I'm not a fan of too much gore and I'd like to know how large the statistical pool is.
Another note: I don't think it's ok to spoil the solution of a crime story.
I had high expectations, learn something new and was a bit disappointed

A well writte, well researched and compelling book that helped me to understand the background of Poirot's stories and Agatha Christie time.
It's well written and fascinating, loved it and helped me to have a better understanding of Golden Age mysteries.
Highly recommended.

I liked the historical background and the descriptions of New York more than the mystery part.
I reminded me of similar books written during the last half of XX century and the characters were a bit underdeveloped.
There's a lot of potential and I enjoyed it even if it's far from a perfect book.

Janice Hallett is a genius at writing mysteries that challenge you and are delivered in an unusual way.
The Appeal is brilliant, well written, gripping and highly entertaining. It's a great book that kept me turning pages and gave me back the pleasure of solving a puzzle.

I'm a fan of anything featuring K-9 and had high expectations for this one even if I never read anything in this series.
It's a pleasant and entertaining read but it's more romance than suspense and, even if I rooted for the characters, I was expecting more action and suspense
It's an entertaining and well written story, the characters are fleshed out.

A good mix of romance and suspense, well written and compelling.
There's a double mystery, one is solved in this book and the other one will be a constant in this series (or so I assume)
The pace is a bit uneven and alternates gripping moments to parts where it drags.
I rooted for the characters and wanted to know who-did-it
I want to read other books in this series.
