This book explores the darkest parts of what man is capable of doing, shining a light into the shadows and exposing them in a gritty manner that is shocking and painful to read. It's told through the eyes of young Turtle, a girl on the edge of entering high school, who lives with her father-- a man who prepares for the apocalypse in a drastic manner and is nothing short of a monster.

My Absolute Darling is written in the way that we think: messily, with ideas running together and spilling over into the next thought, and in a progressive manner that matures as we do. At times it was difficult to read, both because of the subject and how it was written-- it's easy to get lost in the winding sentences but it's worth it. It is so worth it.

It's the type of book that is painful but beautiful, with an ending that leaves you both satisfied but yearning for more. I would suggest this book for people looking for a deep story, but it is not for the faint of heart-- there are graphic details of sexual and physical abuse, suicidal thoughts, and violence. But if you are willing to take on this book, you will not regret it.
