A perfect summer read full of family secrets and rich people drama, LIC is a tragicomic look at how unprocessed trauma can diminish generational wealth. The themes of how one lives up to their family expectations vs squandering the opportunities their ancestors sacrificed for resonated with me as I face aging parents and my legacy. Brodesser-Akner has a maximalist writing style that can seem indulgent; I wasn't the biggest fan of the journey because of this, but I thoroughly appreciated the destination. Take advantage of this summer read full of chaos for fans of WELLNESS (Nathan Hill) or THE BEE STING (Paul Murray)!
