All the White Friends I Couldn't Keep: Hope–and Hard Pills to Swallow–About Fighting for Black Lives
Fuck you, John.
Why. Why would you do this?! You wrote a book of REVIEWS! Just, reviews. That's it.
But then you designed every single one of them in such a way as to make me bawl like a toddler! Fuck you!
But also, this was amazing and absolutely delightful, so... Thank you.

"You don’t have to be friends with everyone, and you don’t have to hold on to friends who aren’t great for you."
This thought process is definitely one that I embrace in my own life. It's nice to see it spelled out for all to see.
I really enjoyed this book, but didn't expect quite so many heavy topics dropped in all at once. It was definitely worth the read, though I think a content warning wouldn't be amiss as it was such a hard issue and I don't think it was addressed well (for those of us in the audience, not for the characters) in the book.

This was different. I didn't know what to expect, but found it delightfully weird and unique.
I'm almost at a loss for words. This book is so good and so powerful, especially when listening to her voice her own experiences. I knew I would enjoy this book, but I didn't realize how much I would love it. I'm already looking forward to both rereading and relistening to this book in the future.
So I'm not one to follow sports. I recognized Kareem Abdul-Jabbar's name as a sports person, but that was the extent of my knowledge of him. This essay has me searching out all his works (fiction and non-fiction) because it was so well written and thought out.
I enjoyed learning about his take on law enforcement and why it's complicated. Since finishing this essay, I've already looked him up on social media, followed him on Twitter, and read several of his recent articles on substack. I'm interested in all of his writings!

I cried so much more than I expected to while reading a book about joy.
