This was a Book of the Month Club pick from a few months back (still one of my favorite book subscriptions EVER) since I've really realized I LOVE thrillers... but this one just didn't thrill me. It felt super slow for a long time, but I kept reading since I wanted to figure out how the case turned out and how the different characters connected... but it just wasn't terribly exciting or really enthralling. Not my favorite.
I'm still trying to figure this one out and wrap my mind around the ending, which is a good sign for a thriller. I appreciated the way this one unfolded even though it felt a little slow at parts, and I was so engrossed in it the whole way through. Definitely recommend this one!
This book felt like it was trying WAY too hard to be a thriller. There were too many characters with too many twisted backstories and storylines, nobody was relatable, it wasn't nearly as dramatic as I felt like it was TRYING to be... it really just felt forced and it fell flat for me. I kept saying I was bored while reading it... but I will admit, I did read through it just to see how it ended. Not the best thriller ever, and not one I'd recommend.
So this was a little freebie thrown into my last Book of the Month box (RIP subscription... I miss you already!) and I read it one morning in approximately 20 minutes (it's the SHORTEST book!) and just didn't like anything about it. The very first paragraph is about a sexual act that the main character does with lots of men for under the table money, so I was super uncomfortable from the very start. I kept reading purely because it's like 62 pages and I was curious, but nothing about it was likable for me. It didn't really go anywhere, didn't really have much suspense (which I expected a lot of from Flynn) and it just felt really thrown together and unfinished. Wasn't a fan at all.
This one started super slow, and was pretty uneventful for about half the book... but then it got SO GOOD. Stick with this, thriller lovers, and you'll be shocked at the twists and turns that you will NOT see coming (even when you think you have it figured out). So, so good.
I read this in one sitting tonight (thanks, babysitting!) and really just didn’t love it even though I wanted to, especially since The Woman in Cabin 10 by Ware is a thriller that still sticks with me! I just couldn’t connect to any of these characters or root for any of their storylines or care all that much about their relationships, and it felt like there really wasn’t much to the plot in the end either. It had some interest and intrigue, but the ending fell super flat for me and my overall feeling is just “meh.”
This one is a unique, drama-packed memoir with many a crazy tale of being a psychiatric crisis guy on call 24/7, and I have to admit it's nothing like any other book or memoir I've ever read. Blaine's voice is one of a kind and his personality is evident on every page, which made for an entertaining and engaging read, especially because the stories he tells are wild, dramatic, and intense at times. You can feel the tension rise as he battles his own insomnia while helping others through their own breakdowns and meltdowns and crises, and the whole book feels like you're right on the edge of what could either be disaster or major drama. There were parts that felt repetitive about this one, and times where I feel like chapters or stories could have been shortened to pack more of a punch (it's not a short book!) but overall, the story kept me engaged, even though it didn't seem to really ever reach a definite climax or have any sort of satisfying resolution.
Overall, an interesting read, fascinating stories, dynamic characters, and enjoyable to read, but not one I particularly loved or would pick up again.

I gave The Genius of One by [a:Greg Holder|298353|Greg Holder|https://s.gr-assets.com/assets/nophoto/user/u_50x66-632230dc9882b4352d753eedf9396530.png]Greg Holder 3/5 stars -- There is a lot of goodness in this one, especially if you’re in any time of leadership role or have any influence in a group or community. In a time that feels extremely divided, focusing on unity and treating one another in a godly way is essential. There are many helpful and engaging stories in this one, as well as thoughtfully worded questions to help you reflect and respond personally as you read. I enjoyed this one and found it encouraging and uplifting.
