DNF @ 22%. First chapter felt like a long advertisement/MLM sales pitch. Utterly underwhelming.
The first person voice was disjointed and didn't fit the atmosphere/ tension of the story to me and as a result most of the ramping tension and disquiet was missing for me. I feel like we needed more space from the characters to really lose ourselves in the potential this had. I think a third-person narrative might have been a 4.5 ⭐️ for me, but as it is, this is the weakest Kingfisher book I've read so far.
I read so many Redwall books in middle school, and rereading this as an adult reminded me why. They're straight-forward and charming, packed with characters, quirks, and adventures.
I was so into this book as a kid, but weirdly could only remember it in broad strokes and the 'adults don't always act with you in mind' sentiments that permeated it at exactly the time in my life I needed them.
What a dark and unique YA book. This and Unwind might still top my list.

Like not all self-help books, but everything here is gonna resonate, but there's absolutely enough fantastic universal advice on treating everyday with intention and knowing you're enough even when you set boundaries, it's a good read and I'm glad I did. I think Mattie has a fantastic view on life and I'm glad she shared in this compact volume
