I feel like this book peaks at the halfway mark with the theater experiences, then drags for another 15% before settling into something lovely and sentimental for the remainder.

The themes and characters were refreshing and empowering, but also has an unnecessary graphic quality in its depiction of sexual violence that doesn't work with the overall tone. I wish that a book focused on talking empowerment and rising above false societal expectations could take a moment of consideration for those of us still dealing with some of the ugliest consequences of the way society is presently.

The best character was a dog.
