The way Ward writes about grief and adversity is honestly incredible. I think the relationships and story were stronger before the last 50% drifts into more and more magical realism, but your mileage may vary. I think Ward is strongest when staying grounded and allowing her prose to be the lyrical magic that propels you forward emotionally.
