this book describes very specific eating disorder symptoms, and i wish that the author had incorporated at least one caveat to say that not everyone’s eating disorder / disordered eating experience leads to their body becoming smaller. however, i DID really appreciate how the author describes that someone eating more regularly again (and/or gaining weight) is not the whole battle — that it leaves mental repercussions for a very long time too. based on the details of the book i’d guess it’s supposed to take place in like 2005ish and that specific brand of diet culture isn’t as strong now. regardless, this was a special book. it made me cry twice. and the author does talk about how it’s heavily based on her life! wouldn’t recommend it to every kid, but if you knew a young person who either had an anor3xia dx OR — perhaps even more — a kid with a sibling or loved one going through that, i’d definitely recommend it! <3
Graphic: Body shaming, Bullying, Fatphobia
