OKay listen listen listen, Washington is a beautiful writer. The painted portrait of a young, African-American woman coping with her career, family history, and mental wellbeing was an enrapturing read. But, I also felt as though there was a tangible lack of a central throughline. Washington's stories were disparate and peppered throughout this memoir and left me feeling like there was no true story to be told.
As a persistent optimist, who am i to judge. again on the spiral of psychoanalysis adjacent literary fiction. i really enjoyed the descriptions of interpersonal relationships and emphasis on community healing in this book. there are some things that medicine can't quite fix that a van of indian sports fans can. i still don't like football but i appreciate its crucial role in mental health rehabilitation
Went from Challenger Deep to this and woof maybe an unfair match. This book was trying to punch out of its weight class and just could not stand up... Perhaps good for its time, not truly worth my time at the moment.
Truly a 5 star read. One of the best books I've had recommended to me in ages. I loved the detailed but intriguing and approachable description of schizophrenia. This is something I would recommend to so many people in my life, but especially my psych girlies
almost exactly what i needed in this moment. i love a “we’ll find each other in any time” love story but also “love is a heart wrenching and life altering endeavor” reminded me of all of my favorite parts of history and love and magic
so much to learn but also… much to unlearn. helpful as a hopeful psychiatrist but truly unsure as to how many of these techniques i’ll be able to adequately implement and which populations they were designed for. a great read for an educated patient population though
not sure if i loved bc it’s just classic steven king with a great movie adaptation or bc i happened upon the best audiobook recording

I think it's a great climate change novel, especially in such a short form. I was enraptured with this crumbling world so close to our own.
We need to stand up girlies. Maybe this book is written for you and you enjoyed Bunny and the other edgy quirky novels about new age feminism. I just feel like this novel Lacks the substance and depth needed to truly address the intersectional challenges faced by the protagonist. If you want a "this book but better" recommendation, I would recommend Natural Beauty by Ling Ling Huang.
