I wanted to love this after how much I adored Such Sharp Teeth, but I did not. Sloane is so wishywashy, her best friend Naomi is a frustrating hot mess but I would have liked the book better if it followed her. I didn’t care about the romance subplot with probably-not-dracula. There’s no metaphor here, the beginning had Sloane reflecting on time slipping & her obsession with aging but that falls away as the action starts. I didn’t get 

This just isn’t picking up for me. I had some issues with book 1 but thought maybe the story could progress in a way that interested me but I’m finding myself bored and over it with the MCs’ inability to communicate Basic information to eachother. 

Loved Atalanta’s perspective of traveling with the Argonauts & all that came after. The beginning was a bit dry, but I appreciated the depiction of the different phases of her life & the achievements she made & resilience displayed. Touched on many well known myths. 

Cute! Fun, low stakes. I don’t know if it will stand out for me in the long run.

My first time reading this one instead of watching & it was really good! The tension & terror of all the characters are quite palpable, very intense.

It was pretty cute. I’m a big wrestling fan so I liked picking out all the inspo. At first Elle was driving me crazy, Logan wasn’t much of a grump for a “grumpy bartender” but as they got a better read on eachother it was really sweet and the 3rd act conflict was so fun.

There are a smattering of misspellings/typos, so fair warning. 

LOVED it!

I could nitpick (some language gets repetitive, at times there’s more telling instead of showing) but the romance, the action, everyone growing as characters, the quest was all so good. & It took a moment to poke at the fans & so-called inconsistencies, which was fun for me.

As always Yarros totally nails the ending. I’m torn between needing more & hoping we take a long enough break that it’s worth me re-reading & overthinking lmao

Long wait for the next one, but I’ll be looking forward to it.

It was a short Westeros-esque fairytale, not as stylized as ASOIAF. Quick read. The outcome or “moral” of the story fell flat for me. 

I think blurb sets it up for failure: “The Witcher meets N.K. Jemisin in a new series from NYT bestselling author Rachel Howzell Hall where a young woman awakens in a field with no memory & learns that the world is dying…” The Witcher I can almost see: the details, the monsters. BUT The Witcher also had nonlinear storytelling & iconic characters. &if you invoke Jemisin: I expect ethereal prose. We do not have those things.

Marketing aside, the beginning was quite slow, the second half DOES get interesting but I never felt invested in the romance, & it ends quite randomly… I don’t feel it was strong enough for that. I didn’t love the tone/word choices. Sometimes casual language works in fantasy, but when you have ageless magical beings with no setting in the modern mortal world calling people “nasty ass” or saying “this realm is a dump” it takes me out of the moment.
