I enjoyed certain sections above others.

This book discusses trans history while acknowledging  the blurry divide between gender roles/the status of women, gay history, intersex people and religious practices. the sections on precolonial societies & spirituality were particularly interesting and cohesive.

1 section I disagreed with the authors conclusion, seemed to be a large leap in logic to include it (the internment camp) & the author goes out of their way to include an intersex person who clearly did not consider themself trans. It’s mentioned earlier that there is limited information & blanks are reasonably filled in most other places, but there was enough to exclude this party based on their own words. 

I liked the plot (even though there is a ton of really convenient timing, that’s storytelling I guess), character development & the frantic energy of the ending. 

Why on earth did King make Jerome do the “Tyrone Delight” persona it’s so racist and for no reason. Please none of this in the next book. 

There are things about this that make 3000% no sense. Major things that are just highly improbable. Basically the whole premise. The characters start to evolve & devolve Willy Nilly. 

 

The atmosphere & the creep level was good. Alex’s inspiration was fun & dramatic & beautiful. I’m assuming this is some allegory for the grueling creative process & publishing world. 

 

Holy moly was it unhinged.

Pacing was too slow, it was hard to latch on to the characters but I loved the Mayan Mythology aspects.

So good. Literally gave me nightmares.

Weak ending. Heel turn came on too quick.
