I decided to read it because of all the hype &strange rumors… but past the intrigue I do not get it…
There’s nothing horribly wrong with it, but the writing style (& 🎧narration)are very light &fluffy even when the subject matter deserves some gravitas, I didn’t connect with any of the characters throughout the story & it was predictable af
This might be my favorite of hers. Very good twisty mystery following a cutthroat family going after the inheritance of an Heiress (who herself is connected to multiple mysteries).
Jules was annoying at times, & towards the end it was kinda like “yeah, I get it” but there were some riveting twists which is tough to do in such a classic scenario.
The audio narration was great, especially the man he was emoting his ass off.
I didn’t 1000% follow the action but loved the message. Wu Zetian is such a badass, she enlists as a concubine not to save her family but for revenge &is resigned to.. even welcomes her impending doom. She is paired with Li Shimin &he’s got issues but they have chemistry &then a boy from her past shows up & it could have become very predictable ..but it didn’t.
Set in futuristic alternate medieval China. The audiobook narrator was fantastic
I love Stacey Abrams (her politics, her in general), I do not love political thrillers, but this was really a rollercoaster of a read with a plucky MC, relatable supporting cast & villains that have dimension (mostly). The clues weren’t set up in a way that someone who doesn’t know about chess or DC geography could figure out, &in the middle there started to me a plethora of new faces &info that got unwieldy. But all in all it was very good
it was very readable & I liked the sass of the FMC… but gosh was it predictable. A complete lack of tension. But if you want brain candy with witches, vampires, pirates, tattoos, smut (that sometimes reads like an instruction manual, but sometimes is ok) & instalove maybe it’s for you.
