emotional reflective sad medium-paced

This was a beautiful and gut-wrenching collection of poems. Alyan's voice is reminiscent of Carmen Maria Machado (LOVE love that.)

I'm eager to pick up more from this author.

Mar is a transmasculine nonbinary teen pirate hiding a magical ability to manipulate fire and ice. But their magic isn’t enough to reverse a wicked bargain made by their father, and now el Diablo has come to collect his payment: the soul of Mar’s father and the entire crew of their ship.

This was such a fun YA fantasy adventure! I loved Mar's journey of self discovery and self-love. The cast of side characters- Bas, the cocky but loveable pirate and Dami, the sarcastic, gender fluid demon.

I can't wait to pick up Novoa's companion novel- The Diablo's Curse.

Why is this so long? (that's what he said. ba dum tss.)

There had to have been a better way to plot this out to be less disjointed and weirdly POV'ed.

It was so repetitive for no reason. But mostly I just lost interest.

This was a very cute read with my son. We read along with the audiobook (which was a full cast production) and had a lot of fun! ND Stevenson has a very unique art style that I enjoyed.

I usually never say this but I did actually prefer the Netflix adaptation. The movie was able to expand on the characters a lot more which ultimately made the story resolution more impactful. In fact, we'll probably go rewatch the movie today.

This book was pure queer joy!

I absolutely LOVED Gene and Luis as characters. They were both so heartfelt and perfect together. Their relationship felt real- the pacing, the communication, the banter, the conflict- everything! And the sheer number of happy tears I cried for them... were numerous.

Not only was this a delightful romance but it was also most definitely a baseball story with all of the nitty gritty details. (And as it turns out, I'm really into that.) I loved all of the team dynamics.

AND THE REP!! Oh my god, the rep! Here we go:
  • Jewish Romanian American Transmasc Gay MC
  • Mexican American Cis Gay LI
  • ADHD Rep (MC)
  • Anxiety Rep (LI)
  • Deaf Rep (side character)
  • Downs Syndrome Rep (side character)
  • Multiple queer side characters- lesbian, gay, and bi

A burned-out retail worker stumbling through the grand exit of their womanhood.
A ship and it's runaway passenger traveling through the cosmos in search of a greater purpose.

Told through these two slowly converging storylines, this is a lovely and very cerebral exploration of transness, gender dysphoria/euphoria, and the body finding harmony with its inner passenger.

Considering this one a soft DNF for now. The world was rich and atmospheric. The folklore was lovely. The comps to Howls Moving Castle were correct. But I haven't retained anything so it feels like I just need to try again later.

100% a weirdo Fantasy/Horror novella and I was hooked.

A dark, atmospheric London. A mysterious epidemic of babies being born "uncanny and monstrous". A compelling midwife determined to carve out her place in the world. A sweet sapphic love story beneath all the calamity.

Major content warnings for graphic depictions of birth and body horror.

Lina Rather has a SciFi novella series that I am now interested in checking out as well.
