kirby2002 's review for:
Witches Get Stuff Done
by Molly Harper
This was not great; it felt like a paint-by-numbers paranormal romance.
1. Opposites Attract
An FMC (Riley) who is quick-witted and doesn't know what she wants to do with her life meets the MMC (Edison), who is put together but has a tragic backstory in a slapstick/contentious way. Did I mention they are both ridiculously good-looking?
2. Tragedy!
When she gets to the island, she meets her Aunt's attorney, Clark. He informs her that she passed away a few days earlier. But with tragedy comes opportunity for the free-spirited Riley. She inherited everything from her Aunt, including a job as caretaker of Shadow House.
3. Is that another slapstick meeting with the handsome librarian? Oh man, she dislikes this guy but wants to run her hands through his hair.
4. Paranormal Twist
This is a paranormal romance, so of course there is a haunted house with ghosts and dun dun dun, she's a witch! She must help ghosts transition to the next life or keep them safe in the Shadow House. We can't have a haunted house story without the ghost of an uptight English butler.
5. Relationship
Edison must make amends with Riley because he wants access to Shadow House. It doesn't hurt that Riley sparks feelings he thought he would never have again. But how should he apologize? Everyone says he should give her flowers, but it doesn't feel right. He's going to give her a basket of books because, you know, he's a librarian. So let's do this...he rings the doorbell, gives her the books, say some nice things, oh shit is that a ghost? It's time to pass out. OK, he's awake, and his head is in her lap? Wait, is he kissing her? That moved quickly.
6. Sidekicks
Riley gets some instant BFFs with very different personalities and looks; a coven is born! Edison's only friend is Kyle, a lonely young man who lost his mom while at college (Foreshadowing?)
7. Mystery!
She must find these hidden objects around the house to prevent the rival family from gaining access and creating ghost-assassins. Yes, I said it: ghost-assassins.
8. Woo-hoo, it's sexy time!
9. Conflict
Edison wants Riley to stop looking for the objects around the house because it's getting dangerous (did I forget to mention the hooded guy with latex gloves trying to get into the house?), and do the ghosts need to transition to the afterlife? I mean, Riley could get hurt. She jumps headfirst into things without thinking about the consequences. But our girl Riley isn't going to take that shit; let's throw in his face the fact that he is scared she is going to die like his fiancée. I forgot to mention that, too. Edison's fiancée died in a freak boat accident a few years back. His way of coping with this was to go and live on an island with no bridges.
10. Grand romantic gesture time!
Riley continues to look for the objects, but there is a hole in her heart. But she learns through the granny gossip train that Edison is interviewing for a job in Boston. She can't lose him, so let's jump on a snowmobile and ride across the frozen lake instead of, I don't know, calling him!
11. Enter Villain
There was no job in Boston; it was all a ruse to get Riley out of the house so the hooded guy with latex gloves could gather the objects to release the ghost assassins. Riley makes it back in time to catch the hooded guy with a note showing the hidden places of all the objects. Oh snap, the bad guy is Kyle (I didn't see that coming.) Kyle holds Riley hostage, but the ghosts ain't having it. The ghosts join forces with the coven and take down Kyle with a chandelier. While Kyle is dying, the note falls into the fireplace. Now, Riley will never find all of them.
12. Happily Ever After
With the help of the recluse ghost, Edison moves into Shadow House. The ghosts are happy, YAY! Riley and Edison are happy, YAY!
13. Plot twist
OMG, the dead Aunt's attorney, Clark, has been working for the rival family this whole time?
That said, I did finish the book, but mostly because I could listen to Teddy Hamilton read a CVS receipt and be entertained.
