DNF at 58 pages. I wanted to like this book - I really did! But for a book that claims to be a "comprehensive English-language work...on the 1976-183 military dictatorship" I found it sorely lacking. First, was the Spanish. I found it frustrating to not have phrases or offices translated. Even though I read some Spanish, I didn't exactly learn military terminology so I was constantly needing to Google. Which brings me to my second problem: the author assumes you already know the players of the Dirty War and everyone involved. There were so many times the author would mention an organization in Spanish (maybe give a translation, sometimes not) and move on. This was incredibly frustrating as even if I could figure out what the Spanish meant, it didn't mean anything. A good example would be like an author saying "OSS (Office of Strategic Services)" without explaining it was a precursor to the FBI.
The final thing that bothered me about this book was the length. While I get in some ways this is a micro-history, focusing solely on Cordoba, it bills itself as a comprehensive history...at 100 pages. The final 100 pages are all appendices that, while interesting, do not help flesh out the history if you don't already know it.
