I had seen this book going around a lot since it got published and it's always gotten mixed reviews. I finally got around to reading it and it's not a bad book, but it's also not something I'd say is necessarily worth picking up. I don't like love triangles in general and there definitely is one in this book. I can hop on board a love triangle if the characters make me feel invested and if it makes sense. I think this book failed at the former. Mare, the main character, had a hard time deciding who she was supposed to trust in the setting she was in, which is why the circumstances of the love triangle make sense to some degree. She had no way of knowing how much the courting from either love interest was genuine or not, unfortunately for her. I do like the political elements that are at play in the world and that there is an actual history as to why things are the way they are now. The way the themes of governmental oppression through societal separation are explored. The author does a good job of showing how thinking of another group in society as "other" can easily turn people against each other.

As far as the characters, there weren't really any that stood out to me which made it hard to root for anyone in the love triangle. Everyone has things they want and some nuance to them, but they just weren't interesting enough for me to root on either side of the love triangle or really be as invested as I would have liked to be in the character's personal struggles. I might continue the series in the future, but it's definitely not on my list of priorities for now. Not a book I'd recommend. Not a horrible read, just okay.
