thegreatmanda 's review for:
A Deadly Education
by Naomi Novik
Imagine Harry Potter, but instead:
- the author isn’t a crappy human and is respectful of different people and cultures
- the dark and dangerous aspects of the school and magical world are faced as central themes instead of played down
- the smart, savvy girl is the main character instead of the boy who dashes blindly into situations to play hero
- social and economic inequality, and productive versus harmful behaviors, are dealt with in relatable and nuanced situations instead of as cupboard-under-the-stairs, sneering-rich-families-who-name-their-kids-Draco caricature
In short, this book is wonderful and I can’t wait for more.
