Love's Revenge
by Joan Avery
Pampered city girl meets displaced European rich man turned cowboy. When Kate's brother-in-law shows up to claim his son after his wife dies, Kate is determined to keep them apart. If he had cared about his sone then why didn't he come to claim him two years ago after his wife died. Kate suspects that something isn't right and agrees to allow Stephen to take the boy, but only if she can come with, and if he proves to be a poor father (by her standards) he will give the boy back.
This trip takes them from the civilized city of St. Louis to the frontier in Colorado. Along the way they meet the Ute Indians. I loved the way they were handled in this story. They weren't the mindless savages that many authors use when they write about the Indians. In fact, I hadn't seen anything quite like their story in a book before and they really added a special and unique quality to it.
Kate and Stephen slowly begin to trust each other along their journey, but of course there are secrets lying in wait, ready to break them apart. When everything begins to come out, it is a truly tragic and heart breaking story. Much of how Stephen has acted becomes more clear as we learn more about him, and Kate seems to see this right along with you. This was a great romance.
