Fantasy is my all time favourite genre. I saw this book coming rounds in bookstagram and inspired by that I bought this book. And I'm not disappointed. This book became one of my favourites.
The world building in the book is brilliant and it's inspired by Nigerian mythology. The fictional world has gods who are responsible for regulating magic to humans. The powers, the sister/brother deities are well planned and well articulated. The cruelty of the monarch and the misbehaviour of the soldiers are also well portrayed. At last, I loved the way Orisha was portrayed to the reader.
The writing style of the book is a little vague here and there but I enjoyed it totally. At the middle of the story, I felt the pace was a bit slow but not dragging which is an added point.
The characters are well developed with their background story and complicated feelings. I liked Tzain the most. I wish I had a brother like him who will be with me throughout my struggles. I hated Inan and Zelie. Zelie was downright childish and Inan was one indecisive and confused lad. I also felt that their relationship was forced into the story. It would have been fun to watch them being enemies. But this doesn't affect the story for even a bit.
Overall, this is one hell of a book with a cliffhanger for ending. I am eagerly waiting for the second book.
