Nimona
by ND Stevenson
5/5! I'm so pleasantly surprised by Nimona! Wow, what a great piece. I giggled I sped through pages (I even flipped forward a few to make sure things were going where I thought they were--and boy, was I wrong!)
Noelle Stevenson gets relationships; best of all, she gets selfless friendships. The relationship between Blackheart and Nimona is so heart-warming that I came close to squealing out loud more than once. While the first few pages didn't quite grab my interest (I thought, "Great another sassy teenager with a grumpy older dude with tension and miscommunication"), but once it did I was HOOKED! I love the limited but nuanced amount of detail and background that Stevenson provided for all three of the main characters without distracting from the overarching plot. There were several little curveballs that Stevenson squeezed in with finesse; I was so wrapped up in the story that they flew right past me.
ALSO! The art progression was quite lovely. While Stevenson keeps her style largely the same, you can tell that she hones her craft and perhaps upgrades her drawing software.
I checked this book out from the library on a whim, but I might have to cave and buy my own copy for my bookcase. This will definitely be one that I pick up again.
