Nettle & Bone
by T. Kingfisher
adventurous
dark
funny
fast-paced
Nettle & Bone was my first T. Kingfisher book. I believe I just found a new favorite author and I will check out more by this author.
In the first section of the book we are introduced to Marra who is the youngest of three princesses. She is sent to a convent after the death of her oldest sister. She finds out that her middle sister is being abused by her husband and decides to take matters into her own hands to save her middle sister. She goes to a dust-wife for help and is given three "impossible" tasks. Her tasks are to build a dog of bones (I so want my own dog made of bones), sew a cloak of nettles, and bottle a jar of moonlight.
The second section follows Marra, bone dog, and the dust-wife on their journey as they collect others to help with the mission. They collect a demon possessed chicken, a reluctant fairy godmother, and a disgraced knight named Fenris. This book was so good.
I just reread Nettle and Bone. I enjoyed it even more the second read through. I have read a few other books by T. Kingfisher now and while I have enjoyed them all I believe Nettle and Bone will be hard to top as my favorite by the author.
