Eartheater follows an Argentinian girl after her mother's death leaves her the ability to see visions through eating dirt. This newfound ability brings her life difficulty and pain. However, its resounding impact is on the families whose loved ones have disappeared. The story reads almost like anecdotes at times, jumping in time, shifting POVs. Through only glimpses of the past, I became invested in the community and the ones hurt by the violence.

I picked this novel up because I am trying to read more translated texts. Though not originally written in english, Eartheater hit like a punch to the gut. I had a visceral reaction to this book, and I think most of it has to do with its subject matter. It speaks of violence and community - particularly women. It was short but still a complex read.
