VanderMeers writing is always super strange and from what i read so far of his is mostly what i would call „environmental horror“ in the sense that it always seems to involve some kind of plants that either mutate or in some way change to be able to either influence or possi me possess people it take them over in sole way.
this story was no different from that. that doesn’t mean that all his story’s are the same just that the have a very similar plot idea but very different variations of it.
and it is quiet horrific to read about someone being taken over or broken by something unexplained or utterly strange.
this story particularly was to long for what it, for me.
there was no real explanation for how it why or what actually was happening and for not really knowing anything and being chopped of in different sections that didn’t really explain anything either, it dragged.
would it have been half as long i think i would have loved it because the concision and terror of the strangeness that is happening only holds so long before it starts to get to a point where it either has be to be explained or end.
sadly neither happens here. instead the story just goes on for to long and at the end k didn’t really care anymore.
overall i like the idea and the beginning was pretty creepy, but it didn’t work as it is, either it would have needed more and be explained or shortened to just be a confusingly creepy read.
