I read this because I was reading a retelling of this story and wanted to know what the original was like. That was a terrible decision, don't do it. This is a litany of racism and xenophobia where the main terror is thinking foreigners and/or people of color are doing demonic things. There's so much racism that even the fact that in the story some of the terrible things are actually being done isn't enough to justify it. It's just bad.
