Where the Crawdads Sing
by Delia Owens
This. Book. Is. Purely. Amazing. ❤️
Kya is abandoned by her family, she is the youngest of four children, her father is an abusive alcoholic and her mother leaves one day when she is 5 or 6. Her dad sticks around for a few years after her mother leaves but then one day, he leaves her too. She is still a young girl when she is left to live all by herself in a shack in the North Carolina marsh.
Kya is at one with the marsh, with nature. Yes - she is alone but nature takes care of her, the marsh, the birds, the creatures that live in the marsh; are her family and friends. I loved how the author really appreciates nature and paints a picture of what the North Carolina’s marsh looks and feels like; the atmosphere that the author builds is wonderful.
Everyone in town calls her the “marsh girl” and make fun of her, she’s an outcast. There is a boy who also lives near the Marsh named Tate and him and Kya form a special bond, he cares for her greatly. Tate teaches Kya how to read, brings her books, spends time with her and is really her only friend besides the boat gas station attendant, Jumpin’ (another character you will love).
The book starts off with a murder of the most popular guy in town, Chase. The book goes back and forth between the investigation and trial of the murder of Chase and Kya’s life leading up to that point and how she got involved in the investigation. It’s fairly interesting and kept me on my toes; this was a page turner! The unraveling of the story was so intriguing, kept me wondering what happened to Chase.
The author writes a beautiful story, I loved every page, every word; the immense details of the marsh and nature - just amazing. For This Tender Land lovers; I highly recommend you read this book if you haven’t already. Where the Crawdads Sing deserves all the stars, this will go down as one of my favorite books I’ve ever read ❤️
