I really wanted to like this. I really did. This little book tackles some big emotions, but somehow manages to convey very little emotion until the very end. There are lots of switches in perspective, and actually I found the fathers and the two boys’s perspective very interesting. The boys especially, because it was deliberately unclear which boy (or both??) we were in the head of. But crow, oh foul crow. Why would this crow’s pov be included? It was gibberish, as if the author was trying to stuff as many nonsense and swear words in for shock value. It added nothing, and took away so much. Neigh unreadable, I was lucky this book was short because I don’t think I could have gotten through the bullshit if it was any longer. Added a star for the wonderful passage at the end.

In actuality, I think that’s why this book so so very disappointing. There were moments where I could see the actual skill of the author coming through, but the rest of the book was so heavily layered over with trash that the brilliance was almost entirely hidden. Give this one a miss, and hope this author keeps writing and gets a new editor.
