First of all, I would like to thank NetGalley for providing me an e-ARC of What Happens After Midnight by K.L. Walther.
First of all, I would like to say that this book was addicting. I could not put it down. The mysterious were very fun to solve— although they were pretty predictive. I thought the synopsis gave too much to the point that I already knew what the ‘grand reveal’ was even before I started the book. Nonetheless, I still enjoyed it.
What Happens After Midnight is a warm, lighthearted, whimsical story about pranks— which was something not really I have read a lot. I usually don’t read a lot of mystery novels, and when I do, they’re about characters committing crimes— while this one is just about pulling pranks. Well, obviously it won’t be a mystery novel if there wasn’t a big prank where everything goes wrong. So, of course, I expected that. Additionally, there were numerous Taylor Swift references (some felt forced) and even other contemporary entertainment references— even social media platforms like TikTok. Usually, I wouldn’t want those in my books, but this one didn’t bother me as much.
Lastly, there was a blooming romance throughout the book. It might have been a little complicated, but we got there in the end. Second chance romance is one of my favorite tropes when done right, and this book definitely did the trope justice. The two characters were both so perfect for each other that they could communicate using their eyes alone. For me, their chemistry was on point and I couldn’t ask anything more from a young adult novel with a romance sub plot.
