With the Fire on High
by Elizabeth Acevedo
An absolutely beautiful book!
Such a cute read. A quick easy read at that too.
Acevedo has skillfully penned an delightful story of teen mum Emoni and her desire to be a Chef.
Life throws Emoni curve balls. She skillfully and bravely faces the heat. Her passion and and dreams are there to be fulfilled yet the question that was on my lips is will she make it?
It took me a while to fully believe Emoni's strength of character. She seemed far too wise or sensible to be a teen mum but as the story unfolds it becomes apparent that she clearly strong and determined and more so disaplined and focused on doing the right thing by her 'Babygirl'. She was evidently a selfless teen which was what I struggled with. Aren't all teenagers selfish?! Nevertheless I empathised with her and was willing her to make it.
Emoni's relationship with food and the kitchen, having her ability to have a creative outlet was a delight to read. Personally reminded me of my teenage daughter who is seeking a career inside a kitchen. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to escape into a warm and nourishing read.
