The Last Girl
by Nick Twist
My Rating : 2🌟
"This is it. There is no way out of this. I won't die without a fight though. I pat my stomach and say 'I'm sorry' "
Being a sole plane crash survivor, this story is about June West who discovers that she has lost all her memories, stuck in a strange hospital and is not even sure whether what everyone claims her to be is true or not. Its a psychological thriller which deals with amnesia, random baby cries, trust and insecurities.
The 1st half of the book was a bit of a stretch and there were a lot of things explained really in detail (which was not necessary), and the character developments were not completely done. Once you dive into the second half of the book, lot of the scenes starts to make sense. The 2 alternating perspectives were slightly confusing at first, and you can make sense of the story separately but how the story of June West was unfolded was not easy to follow.
Also, I felt that the ending was a bit rushed, so as to give explanations for all that happened before, and it was too abrupt. It could have been eased into a bit more. A lot of plots were left for reader's imagination, which is a good thing in a thriller, but can be a little unsettling for some. The ending on the contrary was explained, and all starts to make sense and plots fits like puzzle pieces at the end.
The power of mind and what it can do was explained good and i really enjoyed the part where Floyd has a conversation with Dr.Hope and ends up believing that miracles do exist. The point of view of him was the one i really enjoyed the most, and was what kept me reading this book. I really loved how they explained Brooklyn/June story and all the 6 characters ends up becoming something more than just acquaintances.
Overall, it was a good thriller, but the ending could have been eased into, and the first half of the book could have had lesser explanations. As a fan of thrillers, i was a little let down by how this book unfolded.
*DISCLAIMER* This book contains scenes involving sexual assault, harsh words and manipulation. Its a psychological thriller, so if you are easily offended, DO NOT read it.
