This book, while sometimes challenging and often more than a little boring, is simply a delight. While technically a historical fiction set in the 1800's involving magicians, it is mostly a story about the mundane lives of people dealing in the fantastical. And two pious grumps who hate each other but have too much in common not to be friends. And also a weird, sometimes maddeningly accurate retelling of the Napoleonic war, but with a dash of magic sprinkled in.

It's got everything, enchantments, faeries, murder, doorways to other worlds. I could go on all day but suffice to say, I am sad to be finished this adventure. I absolutely recommend it if you've got some time, because it is hefty.
