As a mixed race person, every time the mixedness of the two main characters came up I was very put off. It all felt very forced and kind of a throwback to how people used to always talk about mixed people like we were confused about our identities and resentful of our perception and whatnot. It felt super inauthentic and forced and kept taking me out of what otherwise had me completely hooked. And then it turns out that all the race stuff was all on service of a late in the book plot point and it was like, yeah, okay, it felt forced because it WAS forced. I wish that all of that had been written differently. That said, otherwise this was my jam. I'll grant I have covid and nothing else to do, but I listened through it in two sittings.
