Herr der Diebe by Cornelia Funke
5.0

I bought this book in junior high school and after reading it I lent it to my sister's friend and that git never gave it back. Now let me mourn over that lost book for a second here.

Years later, I was browsing at the bookstore and saw a copy of a book and the title is Herr der Diebe. My first copy was titled Pangeran Pencuri which is The Thief Lord in Indonesian. But at that time when I saw Herr der Diebe I knew it was the same book I lost years ago so I bought it and re-read it. It was as glorious as the first time I read it. I just love the setting in this book so much. Two orphan brothers ran away from the grasp of their aunt and uncle who wanted to only adopt the youngest brother. They went to Venice where all the magic happens, or so what their mother had told them. In Venice they ran into a group of children thieves who lived in an old movie theatre and it was just awesome because they became friends and there was an investigator who owns a turtle who kept trying to catch Bo and Prosper. And then there's the thief lord himself a.k.a Scipio who turns out to be rich and then there was also a magical merry go round involved. This book is a lot of fun to read.

I didn't know there's a movie until my friend told me in 2012 and I freaked out because ATJ was in the movie as Prosper. I'm happy to report that the book is better than the movie, though.
