I will preface this by saying that Margaret was a more interesting protagonist the girls in the other two books. She didn't just sit around and wait for Stockholms syndrome or for things to happen, it really felt like the actually had a goal and was working towards it, making this the best book by this author I've read so far.

However, I still find her writing bland. It worked well when Margaret was a child but I felt like it should have evolved as she grew up and became more learned. It did not and retained the same blow by blow teenage diary feel with a few interesting events sprinkled in here and there.

I had no connection to her, as I haven't with any previous protagonist in this series and as I've read them out of order I found the ending to be a bit tedious as I already knew what was going to happen.

However, if I had to recommend a Phillippa Gregory book it would be this one as it has the most interesting character so far, even if she is a bit pious.
