Legendborn by Tracy Deonn
5.0

In my entire Goodreads career (which is only like 4 years long) I have never wanted to give a book more than 5 stars. But I want to give LEGENDBORN a million stars!!!!!!!!!!

It has been such a long time since I've been so excited by and so engrossed in a book, that I almost forgot what it felt like. Reading this made me feel the same way I did as a kid, when I would become so absorbed into the world of a book that when I resurfaced, I felt a little out of sorts. It would take me awhile to reacquaint myself with the real world. And LEGENDBORN did that.

Tracy Deonn's prose is electrifying, and the plot and pace of this book is fast and furious. She brings you into Bree's world, where you run alongside her discovering more and more of Bree's past just as Bree herself does. And once you think you know what's going on, Deonn comes in and turns your whole world upside down. MULTIPLE TIMES.

Deonn masterfully combines the legend of Kind Arthur with magical belief systems originated by enslaved people in the American South. By the end of the book I wondered how I ever considered these two magic systems as separate entities.

LEGENDBORN also has so much heart. It is impossible not to care about Bree and her journey, her grief, and her trauma. The death of her mother is the impetus for the action at the beginning of the book, and Bree spends the whole novel hiding from and eventually confronting the emotions and feelings that came from that traumatic event. All the while, also finding her place in this new magical world.

I spent the last few chapters of LEGENDBORN in tears, and also SO excited about what is next for Bree. I can't wait to see what else Tracy Deonn has up her sleeve, and I am (im)patiently awaiting the next installment of Bree's journey.
