maahi 's review for:
The Setting Sun
by Osamu Dazai
The Setting Sun was the perfect little melancholy book I was in the mood for. This was my first book by Dazai and I’m excited to read more of his work.
His writing was reminiscent of Camus and Kafka’s existentialism (I haven’t read a lot by these writers, but everything I have read has had a strong impact on me.)
I don’t really know how to describe this book. It was such a beautiful little immersive book to lose myself into. I’ll admit, the plot is not very developed and few parts are a little hazy but I love how multi-layered this book is. It’s a wonderful musing on the downfall of Japanese aristocracy, the rapid westernisation of Japan, the fight between old & new morality, love, social revolution, and one that I particularly found very interesting, the right to die.
