Iron Widow by Xiran Jay Zhao
5.0

Absolutely Amazing. I was expecting something different then the typical fantasy romance, but the amount of shook I was with this book was a whole lot.

In the beginning I couldn’t really get into reading it because I couldn’t take the book seriously. Every time I read a sentence I heard Xiran Jay Zhao’s snarky voice echoing the words, and every time I’d start laughing. Ive been following her on YouTube and Twitter for a while now, and always loved her dead pan delivery and ability to meme the hell out of everything, especially social injustices. But once I got through that and the mech and animeness of it all I really got into Zeitians story.

She led a horrible horrible life, with all the sexism and all the worst social norms of being a female thrust onto her. Her family treats her as if she’s a burden and abused her daily. I was horrified by the lotus feet but impressed to finally be reading about a character with a disability who didn’t let it control her, it was a part of her but not all she is. Yizhi was a sweet touch to soften up the hardness, and it all felt very typical savior boy whisks her away to safety. But avenging her sister and saving the other girls was a battle needed to be fought and I respect her for being able to risk it all to change the system and take out those who have wronged her.

But instead of the typical girl gets saved, becomes hero, boy gets the girl, everyone is happy, we got a girl meets boy, runs away from boy to meet another boy, kills that boy, gets forced to meet another boy people hope will kill her, girl meets first boy again and finally gets to love him and be together, third boy doesn’t kill her and instead they learn more about each other, understand each other, and finally fall in love. And then boy number one and three also fall in love and it’s a throuple. Oh yeah and then boy number three dies and the girl takes over the world. (But also they’re aliens on the planet and boy number three is still alive but leverage)

Can I just talk about the polyamory tho. Like bro it was fucking amazing. While I did know there was something queer about the book I didn’t expect a full love triangle between them to happen, but I’m so glad it did. Love is infinite, and it was written so dang beautifully. Everyone was soft and tender to each other even though they’re all very strong, vengeful and brash to others. Loved the duality of it all.

The whole dystopian city with robots fighting metallic hunduns (evil cousins of Morris) was a cool setting, and while I did expect the gods to just be humans in space ships, I didn’t expect them to be on a whole other planet and the invaders, which is such a cool twist.

All in all an amazing action packed story with lots of twists and turns, I was all for the vengeance, and although people died it all felt very deserved. I wish Zetian all the best in her endevour to get Shimin back and finally save the girls and take out all the injustice against female, to figure out who the gods are, and I want her and Shimin and Yizhi to be a happy terrifying couple at the top of the world.
