This is a pretty perfect novella IMO. I was laughing at first, as a passenger on a ship attempts to rope a world champion chess player into a game. Then the story got much darker with the appearance of a worthy adversary, who had learned the game at great cost. This is my first Stefan Zweig and will definitely not be the last.
