Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia
dark mysterious medium-paced

I finished Mexican Gothic over the weekend and overall I enjoyed it! It’s very much a slow-burn horror novel, dare I say eco-horror?? There are a lot of spooky mushrooms 🍄 I do appreciate a slow-burn, but until the last 50 pages or so, there was a distinct lack of urgency. Or, less urgency than I’d expect from a book where something or someone is trying to kill/hypnotise/forcibly marry you at every corner!
.
But I really liked the main character, Noemí, so I was content to stick with her! I loved her cheekiness, her ‘nothing fazes me’ façade behind which is someone who truly does care. Moreno-Garcia also writes antagonists as well as she does protagonists - Harold was really something 🤢 And the Gothic tones were immaculate, I got serious Mrs Danvers vibes from Florence!
.
It’s a super unique and creative premise too! I think it’s explained better later on, as there were some parts in the beginning where it felt a bit hazy. A family tree might have been a good addition!
.
A good pick for spooky season!
