Shield of Sparrows

I will be honest. I want really vibing with this book for the first 60%. It was incredibly frustrating (which was the authors intent), and while I wouldn’t let a book that’s just not my vibe ruin the rating, I wasn’t expecting any thing stellar.
Suffice it to say- all that changed in the last 40% and I’m absolutely in love. I felt like all the beats tied together really well, and it comes out on top for a very important factor to me, originality.
As a huge KU reader, I find that authors just find a plot line that works for them and repeats with with new names (and I’m not talking about the hero’s journey) but this was something unexpected, and drew me into a world that I can’t wait to learn more about.
I don’t really know who’s good and who’s bad, the motivations make sense- it was great.
The only reason this isn’t a complete 5 for me is because I feel like a lot of the book was just jerking us among the same question over and over, and I think the reveal would have hit just as hard if it happened sooner. I was rolling my eyes because I had already essentially had everything from the frost 50% figured out and was ready for us to move on. So you could say pacing was an issue. But all was solved in the last half and really boosted that rating.
