Holding Up the Universe by Jennifer Niven
3.0

This book was pretty good. I enjoyed the message and the motif of the book and how it conveyed the main message of the book. I think the main thing in this book that put me off was the romance and how it was a bit underdeveloped and moved super fast for my liking. I did love how Libby was so different from other depictions of overweight characters with her confidence and amazing personality. It was really refreshing and I found her very relatable. However, she felt like a walking inspirational Facebook post at some points. I enjoyed the subtle 'be yourself' messages but they became a lot more in your face as the story progressed. Nevertheless, I did like Libby's character overall.

I was a bit confused with Jack’s ending and how he could spontaneously recognise Libby’s face. I understand he hit his head and maybe it triggered something. Or maybe it was because of his explanation of ‘he loves Libby so much’ but that just makes it more confusing. I don’t know, maybe that was just me that thought that. I just wish the book was extended a bit more or maybe he had the realisation earlier so it could be further explored and properly answered.

Overall, the ending of this book was underwhelming and I much prefered the romance and plot of 'All the Bright Places'.
