It by Stephen King
4.0

Real rating: 3.5/5

It took me the better part of a year to read this book. I love Stephen King and there is always a sense of magic and mystery in his writing––something about his sentence structure, his conversational tone––that seems to tell you, the reader, that he is trusting you with a secret. By the end, he promises to leave you with something truly profound, and you will be changed by having read it.

I can't say this isn't true for 'It'. I was not expecting to shed a few tears by the end, because by the time I reached the nearly 1500th page of my Kindle edition, I was so beyond ready to be done with this book. I did shed tears, and I did feel a profound sense of loss and nostalgia that I found both surprising and beautiful. I would not read it again, and I can easily say that of the King novels I have read, 'It' is my least favorite of all of them.

It was long, in some places it was boring, and I felt that somewhere along in the middle, King lost track of the central message he was trying to get across. He pulled it together by the end, and not without several steep jabs at Terry Pratchett along the way. I am glad that I read it. I'm glad that I can put this book on my 'read' shelf and say, "Yes, I've read 'It' and I was underwhelmed."

If you are coming to Goodreads wondering, "Which Stephen King novel should I read first?" Do not read this book. It is not for you. Pick up 'The Shining' or 'Carrie' instead, because I truly don't feel this is the best example of King's writing or storycraft.
