The City of Brass
by S.A. Chakraborty
3.5 stars
Plot = 3.5 stars ⭐⭐⭐
Characters = 3.5 stars ⭐⭐⭐
Writing = 3.5 stars ⭐ ⭐ ⭐
I was reluctant to pick this book up cos of the hype surrounding it, and I was right to be reluctant. City of brass has nothing new to offer. It is entertaining no doubt but it isn't unique in any way.
Orphaned chosen one not aware of her power meets a guy one day who tells her about her gift and takes her to a land full of magic. So predictable.
I knew from the first page that our not so beloved and little annoying chosen one would fall for the bad guy, and her parents would reappear somehow to help her. I mean isn't this the plot of every other YA fantasy book?
Romance was gross. Story was ordinary. Muslim culture wasn't well researched. Also, the book wasn't based in Cairo, it was based in some fantastical world that resonated the culture of Cairo.
Despite all of that there were parts that piqued my interests like the magic system, the political complexities, and some characters, specially Ali.
It was an okay book. I am not too eager to continue with the series.
