Der Anfang war okay, aber nicht besonders spannend. Ich mochte es noch nie, wenn ein Charakter (hier: Kyran) sich grundlos wie ein Arsch verhält, und genau das passiert hier mit Avi.

Ab dem Zeitpunkt, als sie am College waren, wurde es langsam besser – und bis etwa zur Hälfte war es richtig gut! Die Charakterentwicklung fühlte sich authentisch an, es war spannend, und ich habe diesen Teil wirklich genossen.

Dann kam der Moment, in dem Avi sein Gesicht nicht verpixelt. Das war einfach nur dumm! Die beiden haben sich geschworen, dass niemand (!!!) von der Sache erfährt – wie soll das funktionieren, wenn er sein Gesicht einfach offen postet? Es war unglaublich egoistisch von Avi, Kyrans Zukunft (NFL) so leichtfertig aufs Spiel zu setzen und dabei zu tun, als wäre es keine große Sache. Noch schlimmer: Die Autorin stellt es so dar, als würde Kyran überreagieren, dabei war seine Reaktion die einzig logische. Aber das wurde einfach unter den Teppich gekehrt.

Nur weil Avi bereit ist, seine akademische und berufliche Zukunft (außerhalb der Pornoindustrie) hinzuschmeißen, heißt das nicht, dass Kyran das auch sein muss. Das ist einfach kindisch und dumm. Ob es einem gefällt oder nicht – so ein "schwarzer Fleck" wird dich immer verfolgen, weil wir leider in einer verklemmten, intoleranten und konservativen Gesellschaft leben. Es ist nicht fair, aber es ist nun mal so.

Die zweite Hälfte des Buches war einfach nur enttäuschend. Ich HASSE es, wenn Charaktere einfach wegrennen, ohne zu erklären, warum. Wenn du Zeit für dich brauchst, um deinen Kopf freizubekommen – dann SAG DAS deinem Partner und dann kannst du dich verpissen. Wenn er das nicht verstehen kann, dann hättet ihr sowieso keine Zukunft. Aber hey, das wäre wohl zu logisch und nicht dramatisch genug für ein Buch. Stattdessen tut jeder so, als hätte ihm sein Arsch die Zunge gefressen, und rennt einfach weg.

Diese Third-Act-Breakups sind einfach nur ermüdend. Es hätte Kyran nicht weniger geholfen, wenn er Avi vorher gesagt hätte, was Sache ist. Vor allem, weil er allen anderen Bescheid gibt, nur nicht Avi? Ernsthaft?! Als ob es seine Heilung unmöglich gemacht hätte, wenn Avi einfach gewusst hätte, was los ist – statt sich monatelang zu fragen, ob Kyran je wiederkommt oder überhaupt noch lebt. Es ist einfach dumm und zum Kotzen. Ich wünschte, dieses Verhalten würde nicht ständig romantisiert. Es ist NICHT gut, wenn jemand nicht kommunizieren kann. Es ist NICHT lobenswert, wenn jemand sich einfach verpisst, weil es ihm gerade so passt. Ja, Kyran hat Schlimmes erlebt, aber das gibt ihm keinen Freifahrtschein, sich wie ein Arschloch zu verhalten und zu erwarten, dass alle es einfach hinnehmen und auf ihn warten. Die Nachricht, die er nach Monaten des Verschwindens geschrieben hat, hätte er in der Nacht seines Verschwindens schreiben sollen.

Dann das ganze Ding mit der Religion… Ich bin Atheistin und versuche, das Thema so gut es geht zu vermeiden.

Und die Entscheidung, sich mit den Eltern zu versöhnen? Für mich absolut inakzeptabel. Was sie getan haben, DARF man nicht vergeben. Man kann mit der Vergangenheit abschließen, aber solche Menschen sollten keinen Platz mehr im eigenen Leben haben.

The beginning was okay but not particularly exciting. I've never liked it when a character (here: Kyran) treats someone like shit for no reason, and that’s exactly what happens to Avi.

Once they got to college, things started improving – and up until about halfway through, it was actually really good! The character development felt authentic, it was engaging, and I genuinely enjoyed that part.

Then came the moment when Avi didn’t blur his face. That was just stupid! They promised each other that no one (!!!) would ever find out – how is that supposed to work if he just openly posts his face? It was incredibly selfish of Avi to jeopardize Kyran’s future (NFL) like that and act like it was no big deal. Even worse, the author frames it as if Kyran was the one handling the situation poorly. But in reality, his reaction was the only logical one – and that just got brushed aside.

Just because Avi is willing to throw away his academic and career prospects (outside the porn industry) doesn’t mean Kyran has to. That’s just childish and dumb. Whether you like it or not, something like this will always follow you because we unfortunately live in a conservative, judgmental, and intolerant society. It’s not fair, but that’s the reality.

The second half of the book was just disappointing. I HATE it when characters just run away without explaining anything. If you need time alone to clear your head – then SAY THAT to your partner first and then leave. If they can’t handle it, then you probably wouldn’t have lasted anyway. But no, that would be too logical and not dramatic enough for a book. So instead, people act like they’ve forgotten how to speak and just disappear.

Third-act breakups are exhausting. It wouldn’t have made Kyran’s healing any less valid if he had simply told Avi what was going on. Especially since he told literally everyone else except Avi? Seriously?! As if knowing that Avi at least understood what was happening – instead of being left wondering whether Kyran would ever come back or if he was even still alive – would have somehow ruined the healing process. It’s just dumb and infuriating. I really wish this kind of behavior wasn’t constantly romanticized. It is NOT okay to be unable to communicate. It is NOT admirable to just disappear whenever you feel like it. Yes, Kyran went through horrible things, but that doesn’t give him a free pass to act like an asshole and expect everyone to just wait around for him. The message he sent after disappearing for months? He should have written that the night he left.

And then there’s the whole religion thing… I’m an atheist and try to avoid that topic as much as possible.

The decision to reconcile with the parents? Absolutely unacceptable. What they did should NEVER be forgiven. You can make peace with your past, but people like that should have no place in your life.
