The Strange Death of Anindyasundar by Anish Deb, translated from Bengali by Arunava Sinha, is a short murder mystery that spans over 24 hrs. It is wicked and hilarious at times but what makes this story even more interesting is the audiobook narration by Rahul Bose.

The narration is so amazing. Rahul has captured every emotion of the characters so beautifully. My favourite voiceover was for the angel Suryakanta. His stutters, his reluctance, his worry, his humor.. Rahul captured everything realistically and entertainingly.

This story is about Anindyasundar, a crime fiction writer, who wakes up in the afterlife only to realise that he didn't die of a heart attack but was murdered. He makes a deal with the official angel, Suryakanta, to be given 24 hrs to solve his own murder mystery. But there is one condition- he can't change the order of events as they happened the day before. Anindyasundar wakes up in his bed the next day and realises that unlike a murder in a novel, he can't find clues after the murder happened; he has to go in the opposite way. He has to find the murderer before his death at 11 pm without any clue beforehand. Will he succeed in finding his murderer?

The rest of the book reads the same as most of the classic crime writers, or you can say like Christie books - there is a murder, then we are presented with all possible suspects, make theories, rule out some suspects, find the motive, and set the stage for the murderer to get caught in his own act. This seems like a homage to Bengali crime fiction. There are some inside jokes about crime writers and this industry.

It is just an hour-long story but it was entertaining from the first to the last page. Check it out and I am sure you would enjoy it too.
