None of the Above
by I.W. Gregorio
Started and finished this book in a few hours. Does that mean it’s a complete gem? No, definitely not. None of the Above touches on the important topic of what it means to be intersex and tells the story of a high school girl who, on the night of her homecoming, experiences a few things that lead to the discovery that she is intersex. As if her diagnosis isn’t confusing enough for her, she gets outed to her entire school and of course we all know how cruel kids can be, so drama and heartbreak ensue.
I think I wanted more from this book than it gave me. As I got towards the end, everything just began to feel rushed, as if the author had a page limit and realized she was running out of time. I think that something that started off as very promising, eventually sort of dissolved into feelings, situations, and conversations that were just thrown together. Even Kristin’s assault at the end made me cringe, not because of the assault itself but because of how everything was handled and sort of glossed over, even Kristin’s reaction to being assaulted.
All in all, I applaud the author for putting the effort into writing about a subject that should be discussed more. I just wish the overall delivery was a bit better.
