The Last Colony
by John Scalzi
Well damn, Old Man's War has been such a great series and the 3rd book is just as good as the first and second for me.
So we go back to Perry. he's trying to live his new life with his wife, Jane, and his daughter, Zoe. Of course this peaceful times would eventually have to come to a halt. When the CDF recruits him to run a new planet he forces himself to agree along with his wife and daughter. However, when they do finally land on this new planet things go sideways quick. This is a story about survival, about running a society, and also about uncovering the universe in which Perry and his family live in and how to fix it or change it.
Good: I fucking love Perry. He's just so damn good. So interesting. So fun. He's like a everyday man who tries his hardest. I also enjoyed the hell out of a older Zoe, Jane was wonderful, and honestly the whole cast really hit home. The action was turned down here for more political warfare, and I really dug it. It made me keep switching back and forth to who's side I was on and why. The enemy here was interesting and a new take for the universe.
Bad: The werewolf plotline seemed a little out of nowhere and nothing really came from it except a few deaths. I got what it was going for but it needed to add more to the story.
Overall this was fantastic. A political fight for most of it, and when the action did come, it was very satisfying on top of it. I really am sad to say goodbye to John and his Wife but I'm kind of glad it ended here, in the way it did, to say goodbye in a natural and positive way. A 4.5 out of 5.
