A Novel Love Story
by Ashley Poston
3.5⭐️
Honestly the first like 85% of this was good but kind of mid. But the last 15% had me in my feelings and on the edge of my seat!
First of all I loved all the references to romance books, both classics and modern classics. That was adorable! I also loved how cheesy it was, it was clearly intentionally done that way to really lean into the all the little romance genre things! And I adored the focus on losing yourself in a relationship and struggling to find out who you are again after it’s over, that was so well done and definitely very relatable.
I didn’t love the main character, I found her to be kind of bland. I do understand that she was likely bland on purpose to really drive home the themes getting lost during her last relationship, and she did get more personality as the story went on and she started finding herself again. I appreciate what the author was going for with that but it was still not the best character to read for the majority. I also found the romance to kind of come out of nowhere, the pacing felt super off for me. If she had been stuck in the town for a few weeks at least it would have made sense. But only being there for a few days and falling madly in love with the guy where actively disliked each other hours earlier? I don’t but it. If it had just been the very first thing that made theme dislike each other the sure, but the thing he said to her and the thing she did to him in response was a pretty big deal and didn’t feel resolved at all to me. I also just personally really dislike the “oh he couldn’t possibly like me!” when he so obviously does thing.
Honestly there was more that I disliked in this book than things that I liked, but the things I liked were more impactful so I still enjoyed this read!
